Headland

Frequently asked questions

Getting started

What devices does Headland run on?

Android phones and tablets, Android 8.0 or newer. iOS support is on the roadmap but not yet available.

Does Headland work without cell service?

Yes — Headland is offline-first. Every capture (scouting note, spray record, harvest event, etc.) is saved locally first, and an outbox automatically syncs your work to the cloud when you regain signal. You can log a full day's work in a field with zero bars and not lose anything.

How many farms / fields can I manage?

Free: 1 farm, 5 fields. Pro: 1 farm, 25 fields, 3 teammates. Business: up to 5 farms, unlimited fields and users. See the pricing page for the full breakdown.

What crops do you support?

Row crops (corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, oats, rye, sorghum, sugarbeets, cotton), small grains, oilseeds (canola, sunflower, flax), forage (alfalfa, clover, timothy), vegetables, fruit (apples, blueberries, strawberries, grapes), and cover crops. The seeded catalog covers ~35 common US crops, and you can add your own.

Records & compliance

Are spray records regulator-acceptable?

Yes. Headland captures every field a label-mandated spray record requires: product, EPA registration number, active ingredients, REI, PHI, applicator, license number, rate, area, weather snapshot at application time, target pest, and growth stage. PDF + CSV exports use the WSDA / CA DPR PUR format by default. Other state formats are configurable.

How does the per-crop PHI work?

Chemical labels list pre-harvest intervals per crop (e.g., 2,4-D is 7 days on corn, 14 days on wheat). Headland looks up the PHI for the crop currently planted on the field at application time and warns you before any harvest record violates it. If a field's crop changes later, the calculator re-evaluates.

Can I export my data?

Pro and Business tiers can export every record type as CSV and PDF. Business gets a year-end financial bundle structured to match Schedule F line items so your CPA can map it cleanly. Your data is yours — no lock-in.

Live GPS tracking

How does the live GPS tracking work?

Hit "Start" before you roll out — Headland records GPS breadcrumbs continuously and computes the actual acres you cover. Pause for refills or lunch, resume seamlessly, and when you finish, the session auto-generates the chemical application (or planting, fertilizer, harvest) record with the right time, acres, and field — pre-filled. You confirm before save.

Will GPS tracking drain my battery?

Headland targets ≤ 10% battery drain per hour of active tracking on a mid-range Android phone, with adaptive sampling that backs off when you're stopped. We strongly recommend keeping a USB cable plugged in for full-day operations.

Pricing & billing

How am I billed?

Through Google Play Billing. Use your existing Google account; Google handles the card, tax (where required), receipts, and refunds. Manage your subscription anytime from Play Store → Subscriptions.

Is there a free trial?

Yes — every new farm gets 30 days of Business-tier access automatically when you create the farm. No payment method required. At the end you downgrade to Free unless you subscribe.

Can I cancel?

Anytime. Cancel in Play Store → Subscriptions; you keep access through the end of the period you've paid for. Your data is preserved when you downgrade — over-limit records become read-only until you upgrade again.

Privacy & data

What data do you collect?

Only what you enter into the app, plus anonymized usage events (which screens you visit, which forms you complete) to help us improve. You can turn telemetry off entirely in Settings → Privacy. See the privacy policy for the full list.

Who owns my data?

You do. We process it on your behalf so the app works. We don't sell it, share it with input suppliers, or use it to train AI models. Export and delete anytime.
